B1.6 Diffusion Flashcards
What is diffusion ?
Diffusion is the NET movement of particles from a HIGH concentration to a LOW concentration
Where can diffusion take place?
In a cell membrane more specifically a partially permeable cell membrane
What is a partially permeable membrane
Only allowing some molecules to diffuse through
What type of process is diffusion? What does this mean?
Passive process meaning it doesn’t require any energy from the cell
What are the three factors that affect the rate of diffusion ?
Concentration: the lager the concentration gradient the higher the rate of diffusion
Temperature: higher temp means particles have more energy so diffuse quicker
Surface area: larger the surface area the higher the rate of diffusion
