B1.2-3 Eukaryote And Prokaryotes Flashcards
What are cells?
Basic building blocks of life
What are the similarities and differences of animal and plant cells ?
Both contain
Cell membrane
Nucleus
Cytoplasm
Mitochondria
Loads of ribosomes
Plant also has
Cell wall
Chloroplast
Vacuole
What does the cell membrane do? How do you identify it?
Control which substances can pass in and out of the cell
Thin lining around the cell
What does the nucleus do? How do you identify it
Contains genetic material/ DNA
Big singular round shape
What does the cytoplasm do? How do you identify it
Where chemical reactions take place
The stuff in the cell surrounding the sub cellular structures
What does mitochondria do? How do you identify it
Provides the cell with the energy they need to grow (aerobic respiration)
Small cells with lines in them look abit like a nut or something
What do ribosomes do? How do you identify it
Site of protein synthesis
Squiggly looking line thing with really small bumps on it
What does the cell wall do ? How do you identify it
The rigid cell wall supports the cel and gives it structure
Think wall and is outside the cell membrane
What is a permanent vacuole? How do you identify it
Contains cell sap and helps to keep the cell rigid
Looks like a big bubble or a sack and there is only one of it
What is the role of chloroplasts ?
Where photosynthesis happens
What are bacteria ?
Prokaryotes
What are some differences and similarities about baterical cells ?
No nucleus instead they have a circular stand of DNA ( nuceliod) containing the genes they need to survive + reproduce
No mitochondria
No chloroplasts
Do have cytoplasm
Do have cell wall and membrane
Do have ribosomes
What are some things only bacterial cells have?
Plasmids- extra genes ( antibiotic resistance)
Nucleoid- circular strand of DNA containing genes they need to survive+reproduce
Flagella- propel the bacteria(allowing it to move)
How do you identify a a eukaryote ?
A clearly defined nucleus so an animal cell or a plant cell
