B16 Flashcards
Ecosystem:
Interaction of a community of living organisms with non living parts of their environment
Interdependence:
If one species is removed it can affect the whole community
Extremophiles:
Organisms that live in extreme conditions
High pressure
High temperature
High salt concentration
ADAPTATION
Dry conditions
Longer ears- increase heat loss
Larger SA:V- increases heat loss
Hump with fat- converts water via respiration
Long eyelashes- keeps dust out of eyes
Hairs on the feet- protection
ADAPTATION
Dry conditions for plants
Fewer stomata- reduces evaporation
Thick stem- water storage
Plant leaves covered in wax- reduces water loss and reflects heat
Shallow and longer roots- increases water uptake and reduces competition with others
Leaves fold in(wilt)-reduces surface area
BIOTIC FACTORS ACRONYM
Living things
Always Availability of food
Needing New predators arriving
New New pathogens
Ideas Insufficient no. of species to breed
ABIOTIC FACTORS ACRONYM
Non living things
Little Light intensity
Things Temperature
Matter Moisture levels
So Soul pH and mineral content
Work Wind intensity
Consistently CO2 levels for plants
Okay O2 levels for aquatic animals
Energy lost in food chains:
Respiration
Muscle contraction(movement)
Excretion(faeces)
(6) Describe how living things are involved in the constant cycling of carbon.
-photosynthesis in plants absorb CO2 to build organic molecules such as cellulose and proteins
- organisms do cell respiration
- organisms contain carbon in their waste
- feeding on plants absorbing more carbon
- dead organisms decay, carbon returns to soil and their cells respire
- combustion & incomplete thermal decomposition
Decomposers:
Breaks down dead organic matter
Bacteria
Maggots
Worms
Fungi
Biogas generators:
- Add crop(maize) in generator
- Add decomposers and limit the oxygen so they respite anaerobically
- Methane is produced which is a fuel that can be combusted
Manure
Natural fertiliser
- created from dead plants or animal waste
- Rich in nitrogen so when added to soil decomposers they’re able to recycle the minerals
- Better than artificial fertilisers
