B11 Flashcards
Hormone
2-3Marks
Glands which secrete chemicals(1)
Directly into bloodstream(1)
Carried to a target organ producing an effect(1)
slower but acts for longer than the nervous system
Hormones released by pituitary gland
MASTER GLAND
Anti diuretic hormone(ADH):(kidney)
•Controls water levels in the blood
Thyroid-stimulating hormone:(Thyroid)
•Thyroid gland secretes thyroxine which controls metabolic rate
LH:(ovaries)
•stimulates egg release and progesterone production
FSH:(ovaries)
•causes egg to mature and produce oestrogen
Prolactin:(breasts) produces milk
Negative Feedback:Blood Glucose concentration control
6 Marks
1) Person eats
2) Increases glucose levels
3) Pancreas releases insulin
4) Removed from blood and into cells
5) stores in liver and muscles where glucose is converted into glycogen
6) when glucose levels too low
7) glucagon converts it back to glucose
8) enters directly back into the bloodstream
Type 1 Diabetes
- Pancreas fails to produce enough insulin
- leads to uncontrolled HIGH blood-glucose levels
Treated with— insulin injections
Type 2 Diabetes
- body cells no longer respond to insulin
- risk factor= obesity
Treated— controlled carbohydrate diet
Exercise
Remember:
HIGH = not enough insulin
LOW = not enough glucagon
Possible topics: respiration,the blood,negative feedback,hormones
LIGHT-PHOTOTROPISM
Lovable Puns
Auxin—TIP of the shoot
Auxin—moves to shaded side
Auxin—cell elongation
USES:
Weed killers
Rooting Powders
Promoting growth in tissue culture
GRAVITY- GEOTROPISM/GRAVITROPISM
Groovy Geezers
Auxin—TIP of the ROOT
Auxin—moves to root facing forwards gravity(on Earth thats down)
Auxin—stops cell elongation so roots grow down
Gibberellins:
Ends seed dormancy
Promote Flowering
Increase fruit size(plant growth)
Ethene:
Controls cell division
Ripening of fruits
Helps flowers open
Dropping of leaves
Used in storage and transport
Menstrual Cycle
FED FSH is produced
MONKEYS Matures eggs
OPEN Oestrogen secreted
THEIR Thickens and grows uterus lining
LUNGS LH lvls rise so egg is released
PROUDLY Progesterone secreted
IN SPITE OF Inhibits production of FSH and LH
PANDAS CRYING progesterone levels crash as egg
not fertilised so uterus sheds.
Controlling fertility:
Barrier= condoms and diaphragm
Contraceptive pill= oestrogen inhibits FSH
Spermicide= kills sperm
Abstinence
Sterilisation/Vasectomy= permanent surgery
Implant= slow release progesterone
Describe IVF
4 marks
- giving mother FSH and LH to mature some eggs
- Egg and Sperm collected in laboratory and fertilised
- Embryo formed
- when tiny balls of cell, embryo inserted into mothers womb for further development
