B15 Flashcards
Lamarck:
Evolution was driven by acquired characteristics
Changes that occur in an organisms lifetime can be inherited
lack of understanding around DNA and inheritance at the time
Darwin:
- organisms show variation in characteristics
- individuals with characteristics most suited to the environment survive and successfully breed
- individuals pass on beneficial alleles to their offspring
Species?
A group of organisms which share similiar characteristics and which breed together to produce FERTILE offspring
Speciation (4-6 marker)
1) population becomes isolated
2) they show genetic variation
3) Those best suited to environment survive and breed together to pass on beneficial genes
4) new population changes to a point where they can no longer interbreed
5) a new species has formed
Fossils:
‘Remains’ of organisms from millions of years ago which are found in rocks
Fossils are formed when:
- parts of organism have not decayed
- parts of organisms replaced by minerals as they decay
- preserved traces of organisms such as footprints, burrows and rootlet traces
Incomplete records:
- most organisms do not form fossils
- destroyed by geological activities
- right conditions for fossilisation did not occur
- some fossils might not have been discovered yet
Binomial system
CARL LINNAEUS
Keep Kingdom Putting Phylum Cocky Class Oxes Order Far from Family Genius Genus Starfish Species
Three Domain System
CARL WOESE
1) just add domain at the top🧚🏻♀️
ARCHAEA- primitive bacteria
BACTERIA- true bacteria
EUKARYOTA- protists,fungi,plants,animals
New models of classification:
1) improvements in microscopes
2) more understanding of biochemical processes
3) DNA discovery
Why is there a large increase in the number of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria?
- overuse of antibiotics
- bacteria mutate
- antibiotics kill non resistant strains
- reduced competition
