Q

What do organims need from their enviironment and from other organisms in order to survive?

A

1) plants need light and space, as well as water and mineral ions from the soil
2) animals meed space , food ,water and mates

Q

In a community what do each species depend on?

A

Ofher species for things such as food , shelter , pollination and seed dispersal, this is called interdependence

10
Q

How does interdependence effect the ecosystem?

A

If there is a major change in the ecosystem (such as a species being removed) it can have far reaching effects

Q

What is a stable community?

A

One where all the species and environment factors are in balance so that population sizes remain fairly constant.

Q

Examples of abiotic factors?

A
  • moisture level
  • light intensity
  • temperature
  • carbon dioxide level(for plants)
  • wind intensity and direction
  • oxygen levels (animals)
  • soil ph and mineral content

Q

Examples of biotic factors?

A

1) new predators arrving
2) competition-one species may outcompete another so that numbers are too low to breed
3) new pathogens
4) availability of food

16
Q

What are structural adaptions?

A

Features of an organisms body structure-such as shape or colour

17
Q

What are behavioural adaptions?

A

These are ways organisms behave. Many species migrate to warmer climate during winter to avoid the problems of living in cold conditions

18
Q

What are functional adaptions ?

A

These are things that go on inside the organism body that can be related to processes like reproduction and metabolism

19
Q

What are extremophiles?

A

Organisms that live in environment that are extreme , such as high temperature , pressure or salt concentration. Bacteria living in deep sea vents are extremophiles
