B1.3.3 - Anaerobic Respiration Flashcards
When would you need anaerobic respiration?
Exercise
Why does anaerobic respiration occur?
When you exercise, Yoruba heart rate will increase in rate. However, it cannot exceed its maximum rate so it transfers energy from chemical stores using anaerobic respiration
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose -> lactic acid
C6H12O6 -> C3H6O3
Why is poisonous lactic acid produced?
The glucose is not completely broken down
What can a buildup of lactic acid cause?
Cramp
Why do humans normally respire aerobically?
Aerobic respiration produces more ATP molecules per glucose molecule
Anaerobic respiration produces lactic acid which can cause cramps and fatigue
What is oxygen debt?
The extra oxygen you inhale after anaerobic respiration to break down lactic acid
What organisms does anaerobic respiration occur in?
Many different animals and plants, sometimes microorganisms
What does anaerobic respiration in microorganisms and plants produce?
Ethanol and Carbon Dioxide
What is fermentation?
The process of Ethanol, and carbon dioxide being produces during anaerobic respiration in plants and microorganisms
What is the equation for fermentation?
Glucose -> ethanol + carbon dioxide
C6H12O6 -> C2H5OH + CO2
How would you balance this equation?
C6H12O6 -> 2C2H5OH + 2CO2
