B1.1.2 - Bacterial Cells Flashcards
How large are bacteria?
Bacteria are the smallest living organisms, at 1 micrometer in size.
Why type of cell are bacteria?
Prokaryotic
How many cells do they need to function as an organism?
One cell, as they are unicellular.
Name examples of bacteria
Escherichia coli (E. coli), which causes food poisoning
Streptococcus bacteria, which causes sore throat
Streptomyces bacteria, which is found in soil. The antibiotic streptomycin comes from these bacteria. It kills many disease - causing bacteria
What subcellular structures do all cells have?
A cell wall, to hold the cell together and protect it
Cytoplasm, where chemical reactions occur
Cell membrane, a barrier that controls which substances enter and leave the cell
Genetic material, one long strand of DNA, containing the genetic material of the cell
What does a Eukaryotic cell has that a Prokaryotic cell doesn’t?
A nucleus
