B2.1.1 - Diffusion Flashcards
Where and from are particles more likely to move?
From a high concentration to a low concentration
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the net overall of particles from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration
When does diffusion finish?
When the concentration of particles is equal everywhere
What is a concentration gradient?
A measure of how concentrated something is
What is the concentration gradient when the concentration is equal everywhere?
0
Is energy needed for diffusion?
No
How do glucose and oxygen get into cells?
Through difffusion
What is a way for substances to leave and enter cells?
Diffusion
Describe diffusion in cells
The particles enter the cell through the cell membrane from a region of high concentration to low concentration
What are the 3 factors that affect the rate of diffusion?
Distance, concentration gradient and surface area
Suggest how you could increase the rate of diffusion
Decrease the distance the particles need to move
Increase the concentration gradient
Increase the surface area
Why does increasing the concentration gradient speed up the rate of diffusion?
The concentration gap is steeper, which means it is easier for the particles to move
Why does increasing the surface area speed up the rate of diffusion?
There is more space, so more particles can move at a time
Why would decreasing distance speed up the rate of diffusion?
The lower the distance, the less the particles have to travel, saving time
