B11/12 - homeostasis and response Flashcards
What is type 1 and type 2 diabetes?
Type 1 is born with type two is a result of diet and lifestyle. In diabetes type 1, the pancreas does not make insulin, because the body’s immune system attacks the islet cells in the pancreas that make insulin. In diabetes type 2, the pancreas makes less insulin than used to, and your body becomes resistant to insulin.
What is abstinence?
Not having sex
What is accommodation?
The process of changing the shape of the lens to focus on near or distant objects.
What is ADH?
A hormone that increases the reabsorbtion of water into the kidney tubules
What are the coordination centres?
Area of the body like the brain, spinal chord and pancreas that recieve and process information from receptors.
What is deamination?
A process occurring in the liver that removes the amino group from amino acid to product ammonia.
What is dialysis?
A method of treating kidney failure or disease where the blood is artificially filtered to remove waste and toxins.
What is an effector?
A muscle or gland that acts in response to a stimulus.
What is ethene?
A type of plant hormone which controls cell division and the ripening of fruits.
What is FSH?
(Follicle stimulating hormone) a female reproductive hormone that causes maturation of an egg in the ovary.
What are geotropism/ gravitropism
A plants directional growth response to gravity.
What is giberellins?
A type of plant hormones which initiates seed germination.
What is a gland?
A group of cells that secrete chemicals called hormones directly into the bloodstream
What is glucagon?
A hormone produced by the pancreas that causes glucagon to be converted into glucose and release into the blood.
What is homeostatis?
The regulation of the internal condition of a cell or organism to maintain an optimum conditions for function in response to internal and external changes.
What is hyperopia?
A defect of the eye where nearby objects appear out of focus ( long sightedness)
What is IVF?
(In vitro fertilisation) fertilising s woman’s egg using sperm outside of the body.
What is LH?
(Luteinising hormone) a female productive hormone that stimulate the release of an egg.
What is myopia?
A defect of the eye where distant objects appear out of focus ( also called short sightedness)
What is negative feedback?
A regulatory mechanism that reverse a change.
What is oestrogen?
The main female reproductive hormone which causes the uterus lining tot grow and repair.
What is phototropism?
A plants directional growth response to light.
What are receptors?
Organs or cells that detect a stimulus.
What is a reflex action?
A rapid and automatic response to a stimulus.
What is selective reabsorbtion?
Reabsorbtion certain useful molecules (like glucose, some ions and water) back into the blood after they have been filtered out.
What is stimuli?
Changed in the enviroment
What is a target organ?
The organ which a hormone acts on to product an effect.
What is testosterone?
The main male reproductive hormone produced by the testes and it stimulates sperm production.
What is the CNS?
The brain and spinal chrod which coordinate the response of effectors.
What is the thermoregulatory centre?
An area of the hypothalamus in the brain which contains blood temperature receptors and regulates body temperature.
What is vasodilation
The enlarging of blood vessels.
What is vasoconstriction?
The getting smaller of blood vessels
