B10 the human nervous system Flashcards
define homeostasis
the regulation of the internal conditions of a cell or organism to maintain optimum conditions for functioning in response to internal and external changes
name some examples on internal conditions to be controlled
body temp
water content of body
blood glucose concentration
name the 3 main features of the control system
receptors
coordination centres
effectors
describe role of receptors
cells that detect changes in external and internal environment.
these changes are known as stimuli
receptors may be part of nervous/hormonal control systems
describe role of coordination centres
they receive and process the information from receptors and send out signals to coordinate a response
name 3 examples of coordination systems
pancreas
spinal cord
brain
describe the role of effectors
they re muscles/glands
they bring about responses to the stimulus received
their responses restore conditions in the body to the optimum levels
what are reflexes for?
reflex actions are automatic and rapid and do not involve the conscious part of the brain
avoid danger or harm
breathing
moving food through digestive system
