B1:4 Flashcards
What are vectors?
They are how infections diseases can be spread from person to person
How is malaria spread?
By female mosqitoes, and the disease is spread as they bite poeple
What is the incidence of a disease?
The rate at which new cases occur in a population each year. This is usually per 10,000 or 100,000 people per year
How does the climate affect the incidence of a disease?
In climate where it is warm and hot, the vectors multiply rapidly
How may socio-economic factors affect cholera?
It is high in countries where there is no clean drinking water or a proper sewage system
Why do antibiotics not deal with viruses?
Viruses do not grow and they do not have any metabolic reeactions to be prevented
Give examples of antiviral drugs
Tamiflu and Relenza
What do antiviral drugs do?
They inhibit the replication of viruses inside the host
Why should antibiotics be used even thought the person is feeling better?
Because resistant strains of bacteria develop such as MRSA. This strain of bacteria lives on our skin and does no harm unless they enter the body through a cut or wound
Should octors prescribe antibiotics then they are not needed?
No
How can strains of bacteria be killed
By antiseptics and iodine solution is a good example
