B 1.2 Specialised cells and their functions Flashcards
What are Sperm cells carried out to do?
.Carry the males DNA to the egg cell for reproduction
Why do Sperm cells have a streamlined head and long tail?
.To aid Swimming
Why do sperm cells have many mitochondria?
.These supply energy which allow the cell to move
Why does the acrosome contain digestive enzymes?
.These break down the outer layers of membrane of the egg cell
What are egg cells specialised to do?
.Specialised to accept a single sperm cell and develop it into a single Embryo
Why are egg cells surrounded by a special cell membrane?
To allow only one sperm cell in (during fertilisation) and becomes impermeable following this
Why do egg cells contain lots of mitochondria?
.To provide an energy source for the developing Embryo
Whats the purpose of the large size and cytoplasm in an egg cell?
.To allow quick repeated division as the embryo grows
What are ciliated Epithelial cells specialised to do?
.To waft Bacteria (trapped by mucus) to the stomach
What are root hair cells specialised to do?
.Take up water by Osmosis
.Take up Ions by Active Transport up the plant from the root to the shoot
Why do root hair cells have a large surface area?
.So more water can move in
Why do root hair cells have Mitochondria?
.To provide energy for respiration for the active transport of mineral ions into the root hair cell
What are Xylem cells specialised to do?
.Specialised to transport water and mineral ions up the plant from the root to the shoot
What is deposited in spirals to help the xylem cells withstand pressure from the movement of water?
Lignin
What are Phloem cells specialised to do?
Specialised to carry the products of photosynthesis to all parts of the plant
