B1.1 Cells Flashcards
State the two types of cell
Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic
What is the difference between a eukaryotic cell and a prokaryotic cell?
A eukaryotic cell contains a nucleus and membrane bound organelles. A prokaryotic does not
List the components of both animal and plant cells (5)
.Nucleus .Cytoplasm .Cell Membrane .Mitochondria .Ribosomes
How is genetic information stored in a eukaryotic cell?
Within the nucleus, arranged in chromosomes
Other than storing genetic information what is the role of the nucleus?
Controls cellular activities
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
Site of cellular reactions
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Controls the entry and exit of the materials in and out of the cell
What is the function of the mitochondria?
Site of latter stages of aerobic respiration in which ATP is produced
Describe the structure of the cytoplasm
.Fluid component of cell
.Contains organelles, enzymes, dissolved ions and nutrients
What is the function of the Ribosomes and where are they found?
.Where protein synthesis occurs
.Found on the rough endoplasmic reticulum
What is the function of chloroplasts?
.Where photosynthesis takes place- provides food for the plant
What do chloroplasts contain?
Chlorophyll pigment which harvests the light needed for photosynthesis
Where is a permanent vacuole found?
Found within the cytoplasm
What does a permanent vacuole contain?
Cell Sap
What does a permanent Vacuole do?
Improves cell rigidity
