Axilla Flashcards
What is the apex of the axilla?
cervico-axillary canal;
passageway between the neck and the axilla
Where is the axilla located?
inferior to the glenohumeral joint and superior to the skin and axillary fascia at the junction of the arm and thorax
What are the borders of the apex of the axilla?
1st rib, clavicle, and superior edge of the scapula
What forms the base of the axilla?
concave skin, subcutaneous tissue, and axillary (deep) fascia extending from the arm to the thoracic wall forming the axillary fossa
What forms the anterior wall of the axilla?
pectoralis major and minor and the pectoral and clavipectoral fascia associated with them
What is the anterior axillary fold?
the inferiormost part of the anterior wall
What forms the posterior wall of the axilla?
scapula and subscapularis on its anterior surface and inferiorly by the teres major and the latissimus dorsi
What is the posterior axillary fold?
the inferiormost part of the posterior wall that may be grasped
What forms the medial wall of the axilla?
the thoracic wall and the overlying serratus anterior
What forms the lateral wall of the axilla?
the narrow bony wall formed by intertubercular sulcus of the humerus
Where is the axillary artery?
the lateral border of the first rib as the continuation of the subclavian artery and ends at the inferior border of the teres major
Where is the first part of the axillary artery located?
between the lateral border of the 1st rib and the medial border of the pectoralis minor
What is the branch of the first part of the axillary artery?
superior thoracic artery
Where is the second part of the axillary artery located?
lies posteriorly to the pectoralis minor and has two branches that pass medial and lateral to the muscle
What are the two branches of the second part of the axillary artery?
the thoraco-acromial artery and the lateral thoracic artery
