Axilla Flashcards
What is the axilla?
Space inferior to the GH joint and superior to Axillary fascia at jusctiom of arm and thorax which serves as passageway or distribution center for neurovascular structures, usually protected by ADDUCTED upper limb
Neurovasvular structures then pass out of axilla:
Superiorly
Anteriorly
Inferiorly and laterally
Posteriorly
Inferiorly and medially
Cervico-Axillary canal
Clavipectoral triangle
Into limb itself
Quadrangular space
Along thoracic wall into inferiorly places axio-appendicular muscles (serratus a. And latissimus Dorsi)
When are contents of axilla vulnerable?
When arm is fully abducted
Boundaries of axilla
Apex- cervico-axillary canal
Base-concave skin, subcutaneous tissue, Axillary fascia, Axillary fossa
Anterior wall-p major, p minor, pectoral and clavipectoral fascia
Anterior Axillary fold
Posterior wall- Sup. by scapular and subscapularis.
Inf. by teres major and latissimus dorsi
Posterior Axillary fold
Medial wall-thoracic wall; 1st to 4th IC muscles, serratus a.
Lateral wall- INTERTUBERCULAR SULCUS of humerus.
Boundaries of base of axilla
Anterior Axillary fold
Posterior Axillary fold
Thoracic wall
Medial aspect of ARM
Inferior most part of anterior and posterior wall of axilla
Anterior and poster Axillary fold
Contents of axilla
Axillary artery
Axillary vein
Axillary lymph nodes
Lymphatic vessels
CORDS and branches of brachial plexus
All embedded in
Axillary fat
Neurovascular structures are enclosed in - which is an extension of
Axillary sheath as and extension of cervical fascia
