Axial Skeleton Flashcards
What is the function of the thoracic cage
protects heart, lungs, point of attachment for muscles of respiration, position of the vertebral column.
How many ribs do we have?
12 pairs
What ribs are the true ribs?
rib pairs 1-7W
What is the name of rib pairs 1-7?
Vertebrosternal
What is the name of the pair of ribs 8-12?
false ribs, or vertebrochondral
What are rib pairs 11-12 called?
vertebral ribs, no connection with sternum, floating ribs
What is the sternum?
flat bone with 3 fused components, Manubrium, body, and xiphod process
What is the manubrium?
articulates with rib pair 1, sternal angle, where manubrium and body meet (top of the sternum)
Where is the xiphoid process?
bottom of the sternum
Name the three vertebral columns
Cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions
How many vertebra in the cervical
7,
How many vertebra in the thoracic
12
How many lumbar vertebra are there?
5
Exaggerated thoracic curvature, hunchback
kyphosis
Exaggerated lumbar curvature, swayback
lordosis
lateral curvature
scoliosis
What is the name for C1
atlas, supports the head, nodding motion
What is the name for C2
axis, has dens, has a piece sticking out on top
Describe the cervical vertebra
small body, large vertebral foramen
Describe the thoracic vertebra
medium size body, and vertebral foramen, (looks like a snuffleupagus)
Describe the lumbar vertebra
large body, small vertebral foramen, big body, ends stick out more
What are the three parts of the skull?
neurocranium (cranial bones), viscerocranium (facial bones), sutures
How many bones in the neurocranium (cranial)
8, (1 frontal, 2 parietal, 2 temporal, 1 occipital, 1 spenoid, and 1 ethmoid
How many bones in the viserocranum (facial)
14 bones ( 2 lacrimal, 2 nasal, 2 maxillae, 2 zygomatic, 2 palatine, 1 inferior nasal conchae, 1 mandible, 1 vomer
What are sutures?
immoveable joints of the skull, there are 4 sutures, sagittal, lambdoid, squamous, squamous and coronal
what suture is located between the parietal and frontal bones?
coronal suture
what suture is between temporal and parietal bones?
squamous suture
what suture is between the occipital and parietal bones?
lambdoid suture
what suture is between the parietal bone?
sagitall suture
