2
Q

What does the alert height mean?

A

The AFDS will not change annunciation from LAND 3 to LAND 2 below the alert height as multiple autopilots protect against any probable failure and will safely land the aircraft.
All unrelated caution messages are inhibited below the alert height, therefore a master caution signal below the alert height indicates a significant failure of the autoland system requiring a go-around , or is visual conditions permit, a manual landing may be made
Excessive deviation from the LOC / GS (indicated by flashing pointers) above and below the alert height have differing actions too. Above, may be continued if correcting. Below, go-around must be made or visual manual landing.

18
Q

ATC cancel LVP and revert to CAT 1 operations during the approach to increase traffic flow. Could this be a threat for an auto Land?

A

Possibly as enhanced ILS signal protection is lost

21
Q

What pilot action is required in the event of flashing LOC or GP deviation during an approach below alert height?

A

A go-around must be commenced or, if visual conditions permit, the autopilot may be disconnected and a manual landing made

22
Q

What is the significance of a master caution light and aural signal below alert height?

A

Below alert height, all unrelated caution alerts are inhibited. a master caution light and/or aural signal below alert height requires a go-around or manual landing if visibility permits.
NOTE: the EICAS messages will still appear, only the master caution and beeper are inhibited

23
Q

What AFDS category is available during an engine inoperative approach with LAND 3 in the AFDS?

A

CAT 3B

24
Q

If correct FMA mode changes do not occur, the first officer will call?

A

“NO FLARE”, “RETARD” and “NO ROLLOUT”, as appropriate

25
Q

On a CAT 3B approach, auto throttle failure above 1000 feet AAL?

A

RVR permitting, reset minima, brief reversion, continue
If below limits, continue to a thousand feet AAL, then MAP

26
Q

On a CAT 3B approach auto throttle failure below a thousand feet AAL and above minima?

A

RVR permitting note reversion and continue. Do not reset minima
RVR or below limits, go around

27
Q

Above 1000’, on a CAT 2 approach, the RVR deteriorates below the minima.

A

Check airport CAT 3B capability and suitability. If available reset minima, and continue the approach. If not go around at 1000 FT

28
Q

Below 1000’ on a CAT 3B approach the RVR deteriorates below minimums

A

0FT DA: Land. Visual ref not required
At DH & not visual, GA

29
Q

A NOTAM indicates the ILS standby transmitter is unserviceable. How can you determine what approach you can complete?

A

Ops Part C Low Visibility Port Pages

30
Q

A NOTAM indicates the approach lights are unserviceable. Is a CAT 3 ILS permissible?

A

Not allowed with DH greater than 50 feet.
Jeppesen Pubs, General Airway Manual, ATC, Aerodrome Operating Minimums, Effect of failed or downgraded equipment

31
Q

A NOTAM indicates the centre line lights are unservicable. Is a CAT 2 ILS permissible?

A

Yes, provided the RVR is day 350 metres and night 550 meters
Jeppesen Pubs, General Airway Manual, ATC, Aerodrome Operating Minimums, Effect of failed or downgraded equipment

32
Q

A NOTAM indicates the ILS standby transmiter is unserviceable. Is a CAT2 ILS permissible?

A

Yes, for CAT2, a standby transiometer is not required.
Jeppesen Pubs, General Airway Manual, ATC, Aerodrome Operating Minimums, Effect of failed or downgraded equipment

33
Q

What indication would you expect during short-term interference (ie vehicle or proceeding aircraft)?

A

Erratic IRS raw data indications. Autopilot disregards the ILS signal and continues in attitude stabilising mode based on ADIRU data

34
Q

What indication would you expect during long-term interference or failure?

A

autopilot remains an attitude-stabilizing mode.
Amberline through affected modes
EICAS caution message
Master caution lights and beeper
flight director commander bars disappear

35
Q

What are the maximum wind components for non-contaminated landing in LVP?

A

Headwind – 25 knots, Tailwind – 15 knots, Crosswind – 25 knots

36
Q

What are the maximum crosswind components for landing on a contaminated runway?

A

15 knots

37
Q

Which EICAS Messages can affect LVO capability without causing a change in the AFDS status enunciation or a note in the checklist?

A

SINGLE SOURCE DISPLAYS (LVO not permitted)
SINGLE SOURCE RAD ALT
SINGLE SOURCE ILS
AUTOTHROTTLE (CAT 3B not permitted)

38
Q

What is the minimum autopilot disconnect height on an ILS approach if LAND 3 or LAND 2 is not annunciated?

A

200 ft AGL

39
Q

What crosswind limit applies to Australia CAT 3B?

A

Recently changed to approved aircraft limit. Information on the port page

40
Q

For takeoff in Low visibility conditions, when is a takeoff alternate required?

A

When the takeoff weather conditions are the departure airport are at or below the published ILS landing minimums or the minimums for the approach aid in use

41
Q

The destination alternate has a CAT 3B capability. Is it permissible to file this airport as an alternate if the weather is marginally below CAT 1?

A

No. LVO minima shall not be used as a basis to calculate minima for filing as an alternate

42
Q

After dispatch, the destination weather forecast indicates that LVP will be required. What should the crew consider with respect to the destination alternate?

A

Continue to destination. Assess the alternate weather.

43
Q

If the destination alternate becomes unavailable enroute, the PIC should?

A

complete an assessment of available options, taking into account all relevant safety factors EG destination weather coma aircraft landing capability common number of available runways etc before electing to divert to an enroute Airport

44
Q

What are the weather conditions required to nominate an airport as a takeoff alternate?

A

Crosswind with an aircraft or crew limits, RVR above minima for landing and ceiling if non-precision approach. (Same as destination weather planning requirements). LVO may be used but A/C serviceability and one-engine inop operation must be considered when calculating appropriate minima

45
Q

Normally a take of Alternate must be available within what distance?

A

400NM

46
Q

What Reference contains information on the unlikely effects of failed or downgraded ground equipment on minima?

A

Jeppesen Documents

47
Q

The minimum DH specified for CAT 2 approaches is 100 feet. the port page may specify minimum higher or lower than 100 feet why?

A

the minimum specified in the tables in opposite is reference to height above the runway threshold undulating terrain may affect the DH

48
Q

What are the difference between advection fog and radiation fog?

A

Advection Focus primarily due to moist air mass passing over a core surface and radiation fog due to clear skies at night with a light mixing wind with a temperature and dew point difference of less than two degrees

49

What type of Fog might you expect and KSFO and EGLL?

A

KSFO - advection fog
EGLL - Radiation fog

50
