AWABS - Statistics Flashcards
Types of data
Example of ordinal qualitative data
Mild, Moderate, Severe
ASA I - VI
Histogram vs bar chart
Histogram represents continuous data and bars touch each other
Bar charts are for qualitative data and have gap between bars
Methods of summarising ‘spread’ of data
Range
Interquartile range
Standard deviation / variance
Skew definition
Small tail dictates direction of skew
Tip:
Mean, median and mode move towards the skew in Alphabetical order!
Standard deviation vs Standard error
Standard deviation tells you about the spread of your data
Standard error tells you about the accuracy of your mean
How tests work - Null hypothesis method
Can be summarised by “GOSH” acronym:
Groups
Outcome
Summarise
Hypothesis test
P value definition
The probability of obtaining a particular statistical result (or a more extreme statistical result) assuming that the null hypothesis is true
Eg if P = 0.05, if null hypothesis were true I would expect to obtain this result 5% of the time
