Q

Osteopetrosis in female birds..

A

Increase of circulating blood estrogen when female birds are reproducing leads to an increased opacity of the medullary cavity within the long bones of female birds.
This increased in opacity within the long bones is due to an increased thickness of the compact bone and the laying down of calcium deposits in the form of medullary bone tissue in the medullary cavity.
This is opposite to the other normal variation “pneumatic bones” which contain air and communicate with the lungs.
