Autonomic - Alpha Drugs Flashcards
What sort of drug is clonidine?
Alpha-2 agonist(Raul with claw weapon holding two lit candles)
What sort of effects do alpha 2 agonists have on the CNS?
Inhibit sympathetic tone which can reduce blood pressure
What can clonidine treat?
Hypertension to reduce cardiac output (high pressure pipes under the stage)
ADHD (distracting mirror)
Management of Tourette’s syndrome (Tourette’s marionette)
What type of drug is alpha methyldopa?
Alpha 2 agonist
What can alpha methyldopa be used to treat?
Hypertension
What drug is primarily used to treat hypertension in pregnant women?
Alpha methyldopa
What type of drug is tizanidine?
Alpha 2 agonist. A Central acting muscle relaxant (relaxing chair underneath the stage)
What type of drug is phentalomine?
A reversible alpha 1 and alpha 2 receptor antagonist(phantom standing on chandelier with extinguished single and double candles)
What is a negative side effect of alpha methyldopa?
Cause lupus like syndrome
What does phentolamine cause?
Vasodilation (alpha 1 antagonist effect) (dilated sleeves of the shirt phantom is wearing)
What type of drug is phenosybenzamine?
Irreversible alpha 1 and alpha 2 receptor antagonist (irreversible phoenix tattoo on phantom)
What can alpha antagonists such as phentolamine be used to treat? What should be avoided in these cases and why?
Cocaine toxicity. Avoid beta blockers due to unopposed alpha vasoconstriction. (Person drink hot coca in the side)
What natural products contain sympathomimetic tyramine?
Wine and aged cheese (person drinking wine and eating cheese on side)
What prevents metabolism of tyramine? What can it lead to? What would you treat it with?
MAO inhibitors. Leads to hypertension crisis. Treat with alpha blockers such as phentolamine. (Mousetrap protecting the wine and cheese)
What is a pheochromocytoma?
Catecholamines secreting tumor of the adrenal medulla (frozen colorful dessert)
What do pheochromocytoma cause? What can you use to control blood pressure preoperatively and interoperatively?
Headaches, hypertension, palpitation, sweating. Alpha blockers such as phentolamine and phenoxynenzamine.
What negative side effect do alpha antagonists cause?
Orthostatic hypertension (Tilt table on the stage)
What reflex does aloha blocker induced hypotension cause?
Tachycardia (heart reflex hammer)
What is the suffix of alpha 1 selective antagonists? What are examples of these drugs?
-“Osin”
Prazosin, terazosin, doxazosin, tamsulosin
What does terazosin treat?
BPH. Relaxes smooth muscle in the urethra and prostate. (Bannister compressing on the opera singers but who is holding single extinguished alpha candle)
What does prazosin treat?
PTSD. (Praying opera singer with dog tags)
What type of drug is mirtazapine?
Atypical antidepressant with antagonist effects alpha 2 and other receptors (mirth and misery sign in corner)
What does mirtazpine treat and how?
Depression by enhancing serotonin release (happy face, frowning mask)
