Auditory System Flashcards
2 functions of auditory system?
hearing, balance
3 parts of middle ear?
malleus, incus, stapes
function of stapedius mucle?
prevents excess movement of stapes, controls amplitude of sound waves that arrive to middle ear
4 parts of inner ear?
vestibule, cochlea, semicircular canals, utricle and saccule (otolith organs)
function of vestibule?
contains vestibular window which stapes vibrates against
function of cochlea?
transduction of sound, contains organ of Corti
function of malleus?
attaches to internal surface of tympanic membrane
function of incus?
connects malleus to stapes
function of stapes?
attaches to vestibular window (oval/cochlear)
function of semicircular canals?
sense rotation of head
function of utricle and saccule?
sensitivity to gravity and linear movements of head
function of hair cells in semicircular canals?
respond to angular acceleration
function of hair cells in cochlea?
sensitive to sound waves travelling through endolymph
function of hair cells in otolith organs?
sensitivity to linear acceleration
function of mechanoreceptors?
transforms mechanical stimulus of hair cells into sensory potential
function of inner hair cells of cochlea?
primary sensory input, activates 8th nerve
function of outer hair cells of cochlea?
inc. amplitude and clarity of sound
how is pitch determined?
by where a sound wave maximally activates membrane of cochlea
how does sound travel to brain from ear?
8th nerve afferent fibers->cochlea -> inferior coliculi (midbrain) -> thalamus -> temporal lobe
function of vestibular apparatus?
detects head motion
vestibular nuclei function?
maintains body position in space
8th nerve function?
supplies semicircular canals & maculae synapse with neuron in vestibular nuclei and cerebellum
cerebellum and cortex function?
provide control over sensory integration and motor process
what effect does head rotation have on hair cells?
activates hair cells in semicircular canal
what’s nystagmus?
characteristic eye movement at the beginning & end of head rotation
what does utricular macula respond to?
horizontal acceleration
what does saccular macula respond to?
vertical acceleration
function of nystagmus?
maintains visual fixation by moving eyes in opposite direction of rotation
how do mechanoreceptors work?
mechanically sensitive K ion channels open and let K into cell when short hair leans on long hair -> depolorization -> Glu release -> activates cochlea nerve
what do hair cells in otolith organs contain?
crystals of CaCO3 (calcium carbonate)
what are hair cells bathed in?
endolymph (high in K)
what’s organ of Corti?
receptor organ of hearing located in cochlea
