Audition Flashcards
Sound waves
Oscillating movement in the air caused by vibrations of objects
in the environment
Crest
Top of the sound wave
Trough
Bottom of the sound wave
Amplitude
Difference between crest and trough: shows the loudness of the sound wave
Outer Ear
pinna & ear cannal; Collects and focuses sound waves
Middle Ear
ossicles; Transfers and amplifies sound vibrations from outside (air) to inside (fluid)
Inner Ear
cochlea, basilar membrane, auditory nerve; Converts sound vibrations
into neural signal
What are the three ossicles?
Malleus
Incus
Stapes
Hearing Aids
amplifies the sounds
cochlear implants
deliver sound directly to the auditory nerve
Tonotonic map:
Location based
on frequency of sound
frequency
pitch
location of sound is told through
interaural level/time difference
misophonia
Misophonia is a disorder of
decreased tolerance to specific
sounds
McGurk Effect
hear what we see
