Attribution Flashcards
What is attribution
Inferring causal factors to other’s behaviours - the theories we construct
What is the theory of naive psychology and by who
Fritz Heider -> People are intuitive psychologists
What is the correspondent inference , by who was it introduced
The casual attribution of behaviours to stable traits, comes from a desire of control => NED JONES
Covariation model = describe and by who
HAROLD KELLEY -> Covariation is used to identify cause of behaviour using three aspects:
CONSISTENCY
DISTINCTIVENESS
CONSENSUS INFORMATION
What is the fundamental attribution error
People link behaviour of others to internal factors (ie: they are responsible) and tend to underestimate the influence of external factors = correspondent bias
What is the False consensus effect and cite a study
People see their own behaviour as typical and assume others do the same
-> Ross et al 1977 : sandwich board experiment
Two studies about the “belief in a just world” phenomenon
Melvin Lerner 1966
Foley & Pigott 2000 : strong belief in a just world = more victim blaming to protect this belief
Self-perception theory def and figure
Daryl Bem , we develop our own theories about ourselves
Self-serving bias
In positive events with positive outcome we attribute it to internal factors (ex: I made it happen!) but in negative events and negative outcome on external factors (it was his fault)
The actor-observer effect describe and study
We attribute our behaviour to external factors, but behaviour of others to internal factors : Jones & Nisbett 1972
Internal locus of control vs external locus of control difference
Internal = active , it's my responsibility External = passive , not my fault
Describe Fixed vs Growth mindset and who proposed it
Carole DWECK
Fixed mindset = intelligence and abilities are innate and can’t change
Growth mindset = They can be modified and improved with work
