Attribute Tables Flashcards
Attribute Data
Non-spatial information about a geographic feature in a GIS, usually stored in a table and linked to the feature by a unique identifier.
Rows
Each one on an attribute table represents a geographic feature.
Column
Each one contains information on the attributes of the geographic features.
Measurement Levels
A classification that describes the nature of information within the values assigned to variables.
Nominal
Non-comparative measurement usually representing a description or a name. (Assigns a phenomenon to a class/group)
Ordinal
Ranked data that are comparable only within a given spectrum.
Interval
Comparative data with a relatively high degree of accuracy, but with an arbitrary starting point.
Ratio
Highest level of data measurement that includes an absolute starting point and allows ratios of values to be produced.
Select by attribute
GIS feature that allows the user to select a subset of geographic features by writing an expression.
Joining Tables
Adding variable information from one table to the attribute table so it can be mapped.
Column-in-Common
In order to join tables, they must each have a field in common with the same values.
Cardinality
The numerical relationship between rows of one table and rows of another. It may be one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-one, or many-to-many.
