attitudes to work- workplace sabotage Flashcards
workplace sabotage
- rule-breaking behaviours aimed at hindering work progress
- result of DISSATISFACTION+POWERLESSNESS
Taylor+Walton- why are rules broken/employees make conscious decision to stop self+others from working for an org
- caused by frustration- employees feel powerless
- attempt to make work conditions BETTER (wages, physical conds)
- attempt to challenge authority- employees feel leaders aren’t performing
absenteeism
significant cost to organisation caused by workplace stress
organisational commitment
involvement in organisation’s goals+groupwork
voluntary absenteeism
worker chooses not to attend work due to dissatisfaction
involuntary absenteeism
absence usually due to illness
Blau+Boal used job involvement+organisational commitment to predict
turnover+absenteeism
HIGH JI, HIGH OC
‘stars of org’
work important for self esteem, low turnover, likely promoted
absent due to medical reasons
HIGH JI, LOW OC
‘lone wolves’
work important but only focus on ind work, not group
absent due to career enhancing
LOW JI, HIGH OC
‘corporate citizens’
work unimportant, but identity w/ org important, effort on groupwork, less on ind
normative absence: habitual predictable leaves
LOW JI, LOW OC
‘apathetic employees’- least valuable-work not viewed as important to self image
dont contribute to group maintenance
calculative absence: maximum leaves before sanction
instrumental sabotage
trying to achieve limited demands(higher wages/change in socio-political power)
demonstrative sabotage
protesting against management/injustice of accepted values
AIM of Giacalone+Rosenfield
explore employee reasons used to justify sabotage
4 sabotage types
- work slowdowns(deliberate)
- destructiveness (purposeful damaging of property, resources)
- dishonesty (provide false info/fraud, misrepresenting data)
- causing chaos (creating confusion, disruption within workplace)
G+R design+sample
quasi-experimental
38 unionised labourers in electrical factory
questionnaires constructed w/ help of ex-employee of 5 years service(listed ways used to sabotage company)
sabotage METHODS questionnaire
rate 29 forms on 7 point scale
losing paperwork, pulling fire alarm, graffiti on bathroom walls
sabotage REASONS questionnaire
rate 11 reasons using 7 point scale
self defense, eye for an eye, protect self/fam from boss, company deserved it, release of frustration
G+R procedure
workers asked to rate set of reasons+methods justifying work sabotage on scale of 1(not justifiable)->7(totally justifiable)
median split performed on reasons creating 2 groups
high reason acceptors: wide variety of reasons
low reason acceptors: few reasons
G+R results
sabotage justification: HIGH reason acceptors- slowdowns, destructions, chaos MORE justifiable than low
- no sig diffs for dishonesty, but high reason leant towards
- justifiable reasons for sabotage:
HIGH- protect oneself, self defense from boss
LOW- frustration release, for fun
G+R conc:
acceptance seems to affect justification, except dishonesty
- slowdowns, destructions, chaos aim to hurt company, but NO MONETARY GAIN
- dishonesty- qualitatively diff(justified for diff reasons BUT misinterpreted by management)
- if sabotage=self serving, then hasn’t served DEMONSTRATIVE function
- dishonesty threatens self-esteem- others don’t
