Competitive driving…
Causes risks to everyone. New drivers are more likely to crash from being competitive and showing off
What should you do if an emergency vehicle is approaching you from behind?
If an emergency vehicle is approaching you from behind you should… Pull over when it is safe to do so. Look out for any hazards that might prevent the vehicle from passing if you stop in a certain place.
Zebra Crossings
If you approach a Zebra crossing and pedestrians are waiting to cross, SLOW DOWN and prepare to STOP. If you stop at a crossing and the pedestrians do not start to cross, be patient and wait. NEVER wave pedestrians across as there might be another vehicle you have not seen
Pelican Crossings
If the lights are flashing amber you MUST give way to the pedestrians crossing the road. If there are no pedestrians crossing then you may proceed with caution.
Puffin Crossings
The traffic lights will only change to green when the crossing is completely clear.
What is a similarity between pelican and puffin crossings?
Pelican and Puffin crossings are both signal controlled crossings
Toucan Crossings
Two can cross at a toucan crossing (cyclists and pedestrians)l
Pegasus/Equestrian Crossings
Horses can cross as well as pedestrians
Tailgating
When a driver follows the vehicle in front too closely
“Only a fool breaks the 2 second rule”
Say it twice in wet weather
Overtaking
If a car wants to overtake, let it do so. SLOW DOWN if needed
Turning right
Take up the correct position early by moving to the right hand side of your lane

One way road
Refuelling
Use the correct fuel. Avoid spillages. Ensure the filler cap is securely fastened
Blue bus signs
If no times are displayed then the bus lane is in operation 24 hours a day
Bus stops
If safe to do so, GIVE WAY
Positioning in road (large vehicles)
They need more room to manoeuvre
Travelling behind a large vehicle…
Keep well back to allow you a better view of the road ahead and you’ll be seen in the vehicle’s mirrors
Lorry overtaking you…
If possible, let the vehicle pass so it’s not holding up traffic. Large vehicles take longer to overtake due to their length and weight
Trams = Light Rapid Transits (LRT)
Powered by electricity. Cyclists are at risk as their wheels can get stuck in the tracks. Operate in urban areas. Cannot steer to avoid you. Run on tracks. Do not drive on, or block routes.
Unmarked crossroads
No-one has priority. Slow down & approach with caution. Complete thorough observations. It’s safer to keep vehicles on your right and turn behind them
A vehicle pulling out in front of you
Slow down and be ready to stop. You may need to drop back, leaving a safe gap. DO NOT react to any error
Overtaking a horse and rider
Pass slowly & carefully. Give them plenty of room. DO NOT speed up until you are clear.
Herd of sheep
Turn your engine off so animals do not get startled whilst crossing the road
Slow moving vehicles
If you are driving a slow moving vehicle on a winding road, when safe to do so allow following vehicles to overtake. DO NOT wave vehicles past
Lights…
Use your handbrake instead of footbrake if you get stuck in a queue of traffic to avoid dazzling drivers. Turn on your dipped headlights when it starts to get dark. Using full beam provides better visibility
When should you use your horns or flash your headlights?
Only use your horn, or flash your headlights to alert other road users of your presence
