attachment - relationships Flashcards
what is meant by the internal working model
according to Bowlby, infants develop a schema based on their attachment to their primary caregiver, this schema acts as a template to how how their future relationships will work
what does the continuity hypothesis suggest
an individuals future relationships will follow a pattern based on their internal working model
what did hazen and shaver argue
an adults relationship type is a continuation of their infant attachment style and secure children will be more socially capable than insecure types.
what does Bowlbys maternal deprivation theory suggest
children with a disrupted attachment with their primary caregiver in the critical period have problems with social, emotional and intellectual development, affecting adult relationships
what is hazan and shavers love quiz
assessed child hood attachment types and the participants adults relationship styles
what were hazan and shavers findings from their love quiz
- 56% were securely attached and looked for balance between closeness and independence
- 25% were avoidant who avoided intimacy
- 19% who were resistant couldn’t cope well with independence
- there was a correlation between adult and child attachment types
what are the strengths of relationships
- McCarthy studied women who were assessed using the strange situation as infants. it was found adults with long lasting and secure friendships and relationships were securely attached in infancy
- Myron-Wilson found children assessed as bullies had low scores in parental warmth and high scores in parental neglect. those assessed as victims scored highly on parental punitiveness ( punishments )
what are the weaknesses of relationships
- Kagan’s temperament hypothesis suggests infants and adults relationships are due to inherited temperament. high reactivity babies grow into inhibited and anxious adults and low reactive infants grow into outgoing adults
- early attachment research is correlational so it is impossible to establish a cause and effect relationship between early childhood attachment and later adult relationship styles; there may be another variable such as poverty
