Reciprocity
Both infant and mother/ caregiver respond to each other’s signals and elicits a response from the other
Interactional synchrony
Mother and infant reflect both the actions and emotions of the other and do this in a coordinated way
Schaffer’s stages of attachment: Stage 1
Asocial stage:
Baby is recognising and forming bonds with carers
Behaviour towards non-human objects and humans is quite similar
Preference for familiar adults e.g. easier to calm them
Happier in the presence of other humans

Indiscriminate attachment, 2-7 months:
Preference for people rather than inanimate objects
Recognise and prefer familiar adults
Usually accept comfort from any adult
Do not show separation or stranger anxiety

Specific attachment, 7 months onwards:
Start to show stranger ad separation anxiety
Formed specific attachment to primary attachment figure
