Attachment Flashcards
what is reciprocity
both baby and caregiver respond to signals from one another then that elicits a response
what are alert phases
periodic phases when baby signals when they are ready for interaction
from around 3 months signalling becomes more frequent
mother and baby paying close attention to verbal and physical cues (Feldman)
what did Eidelman and Feldman suggest in 2007 about alert phases
mothers respond to alert phases 2/3 time
however varies on skill and experience of mother
e.g. first child or not
what is active involvement
Brazelton
babies as well as caregivers play a part in the interactions
active involvement
what is interactional synchrony
caregiver and baby reflect both the actions and emotions of the other and do this in co-ordinated way
what did Meltzoff and Moore suggest about interactional synchrony
beginning of synchrony
observation of babies only 2 weeks old
adult displayed 1 of 3 facial expressions/1 of 3 distinctive gestures
babies reactions filmed and labelled
significant association w parents reactions
what did Isabella et al (1989) suggest about the importance of interactional synchrony
observed 30 mothers and babies
assessed on degree of synchrony
also assessed strength of their attachment
high synchrony levels= better attachment
