ATP Flashcards
What type of molecule is atp?
Phosphorylated macromolecule
What three parts does atp contain?
Adenine, ribose acts as backbone abd phosphates chain of 3
Where is energy stored?
Bonds between three phosphate groups
How is energy released?
Bonds between phosphate groups are unstable so have low activation energy and are easily broken to release a lot of energy
What is the equation when ATP releases energy?
ATP +H2O = ADP +Pi + energy
What is it called when ATP is converted to ADP and what catalyses the reaction?
Hydrolysis catalysed by ATP hydrolase
What is it called when ADP is converted to ATP and what is it catalysed by?
Condensation reaction catalysed by ATP synthase
What does the synthesis of ATP from ADP require?
Addition of phosphate molecule
When can the synthesis of ATP from ADP occur?
- In chlorophyll containing plants during photosynthesis
- In plant and animal cells during respiration
- In plant and animal cells when phosphate groups are transferred from donor molecules to ADP
What type of energy source is ATP?
Immediate so not stored
Why is ATP a good immediate energy source? Why better than glucose?
Releases small managebale amounts of energy compared to large amounts released by glucose
The hydrolysis of atp to adp is a single reaction that releases immediate energy whereas breakdown of glucose is many reactions
What 5 things is ATP used for?
- Metabolic processes
- Movement
- Active transport
- Secretion
- Activation of molecules make more reactive lowering ae
