ATP Flashcards
What does ATP stand for?
Adenosine triphosphate
What is ATP?
Universal energy currency that provides immediate energy to all living organisms
What type of molecule is ATP?
Phosphorylated macromolecule
What does the structure contain?
Adenine x2, ribose and 3 phosphates
What can ATP be hydrolysed to?
ADP and Pi
How does it store energy?
Bonds between phosphate groups are unstable so have low activation energy and are easily broken releasing energy
What is the hydrolysis of ATP catalysed by?
ATP hydrase
What is condensed to form ATP
ATP and Pi
What is the condensation reaction catalysed by?
ATP synthase
What are the properties of ATP?
Soluble, used where made, not stored in large amounts, only synthesised when needed
Why is ATP useful?
Immediate energy source not long term releases smaller more manageable energy, hydrolysis is a single reaction so released quickly
Where is it made in the cell?
Mitochondria
What 5 things is it used in?
metabolic processes, movement, active transport, secretion and activation of molecules
