Atoms (J) Flashcards
Electron facts
Moves round nucleus Negatively charged Tiny but cover a lot if space Virtually no mass Occupy shells around the nucleus
The nucleus. Facts
Sits in the middle of atom
Contains protons and neutrons
It has a positive charge because of protons
Almost the whole mass of atom is concentrated in the nucleus
Size - it’s tiny
Number of protons equal number of electrons
Protons - positively charged
Neutrons - neutral
Electrons -negatively charged
The atomic number tells you
How many protons and electrons there are.
To get neutrons subtract atomic No from mass No
Mass No always the biggest No, it tells you the relative mass of atom. It’s roughly double the atomic No
Mass No -total of protons and neutrons
Isotopes - Definition
Isotopes are different atomic forms of the same element, which have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons and different mass number.
Popular ones are carbon-12 and carbon-14
Carbon 12 = 6 protons, 6 electrons, 6 neutrons
Carbon 14 = 6 protons, 6 electrons, 8 neutrons
