Acids & Bases Flashcards
Properties of a Base
Feel slippery Taste bitter Corrosive Can conduct electricity (think alkaline batteries) Do not react with metals Turns red litmus paper blue
Properties of a acid
Taste sour Consists electricity Corrosive, which means they break down certain substances Some acids react strongly with metals Turns blue litmus paper red
What is a base
A base is a solution that has excess of OH- ions
Another name for a base is alkali
BASES are substances that can accept hydrogen ions
What is an acid
An acid is a solution that has excess of H+ ions.
The more H+ ions! the more acidic the solution
Acid reactions
Acid + Base = Salt + Water
Acid + Metal = Salt + Hydrogen
Acid + Carbonate = Salt + Water + Carbon Dioxide
Hydrochloric acids forms CHLORIDE salts
Nitric acids forms NITRATE salts
Sulfuric acid forms SULFATE salts
Neutralisation Reaction
This is the equation for any neutralisation reaction
Acid + Base = Salt + Water
When an acid neutralises a base, the products are neutral (pH7)
