Atkins Lecture Flashcards
What sites are along the river wensum
Sssi
What factors have to be taken into account in terms if feasibility
Baseline conditions, conceptual design, outline costs, environmental scoping
What factors influence morphological and ecological conditions
Impoundment, barriers regulation, historical channel modification, point source and diffuse pollution, fine sediment input, abstractions/ discharges, non native species
At what stages were phosphate content exceeding the limits of the site
From starting at 15km in down to 55km to the end
What do Atkins do when they first get to a site
Site walk over, assess challenges
What are the 4 restoration design philosophy
Total restoration
Kick start
Opportunistic
Adaptive management
What is total restoration
High density application of fully formed restoration features, complete river restoration, applicable when the river needs urgent help or cant restore on it’s own
What is kick start restoration
Medium density application of partially formed features, uses the existing function of the river to allow natural processes to happen
What is the opportunistic approach
Low density application of fully formed features, where restoration is applied to a short stretch of river due to favourable circumstances
What is adaptive management
Loom see adapt accordingly
What effect does a log have downstream
Large calibre deposition and creation of ruffles and gravels
What do trunk centries do
Create gravel bed alterations downstream
What planning must be taken out before a project
Landowners, public, opendays, identify statuary consultees and approach, planning permission
