ATHENA WEEK 3 - 2 Flashcards
For a development to be successful, it must simultaneously achieve 3 goals
- maximizing the product’s fit with CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS
- MINIMIZING the DEVELOPMENT CYCLE TIME
- controlling DEVELOPMENT COSTS
Development cycle time
the time elapsed from project initiation to product launch, usually measured in months or years
development process: sequential
Processes/steps do not overlap: proceeds from one development stage to another in sequential way
development process: partly parallel
Some of the development activities at least partially overlap
concurrent engineering
a type of parallel development process which involves not only conducting the typical product development stages simultaneously but also considers downstream stages of a product’s lifecycle (maintenance, disposal, recycling)
Why should firms assign a senior member to champion a new product development project?
Because studies show having a senior “champion” helps drive the project forward, gain support, and overcome obstacles, increasing the chance of success.
Advantages of having senior champion
- Senior executives have the POWER and AUTHORITY to support and fight for a project
- They can FACILITATE the allocation of human and capital resources to the development effort, ensuring that cycle time is
not extended by resource constraints - They can STIMULATE COMMUNICATION and COOPERATION between the different functional groups involved in the development
process
Risks of championing
A manager’s role as champion may CLOUD JUDGEMENT above the true value of the project
Other employees might be unwilling to challenge their senior champion UNCOMFORTABLE/SCARED
Lead users
Customers who face the same general needs of the marketplace but are likely to experience them months or years earlier than the rest of the market and stand to benefit disproportionately from solutions to those needs (they are also likely to co-create the innovation).
sport people who used GoPros used them way before the average person wanted them.
involving suppliers
can help contribute ideas for product improvement or increased development efficiency
crowdsourcing
A distributed problem-solving model whereby a design problem or production task is presented to a group of people who voluntarily contribute their ideas and effort in exchange for compensation, intrinsic rewards, or a combination of these
stage-gate processes
from idea to launch is presented
explain the gates and GO-KILL POINTS
the Gate is the checkpoint in the process, and the Go/Kill Decision is the decision made at that checkpoint:
✅ Go forward
❌ Kill the project
🔄 Revise and recheck
Quality Function Deployment – The House of Quality
It’s a tool (a big matrix/table) that helps a company translate CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS into specific PRODUCT ATTRIBUTES.
It looks like a “house” because of its shape, so it’s called The House of Quality.
What is Design for Manufacturing (DFM)?
designing products in a way that makes them easy and efficient to manufacture, !!!by considering production challenges EARLY in the design process!!!
COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN/COMPUTER-AIDED ENGINEERING/COMPUTER AIDED MANUFACTURING
The use of computers to build and test product designs and include machine-controlled processes in manufacturing
There dimensional printing -> method whereby a design developed in a computer aided design program is printed in three dimensions
