Asthma & COPD Flashcards
Anticholinergics drugs (parasympatholytics)
Ipratropium and tiotropium
MOA of Ipratroprium and Tiotropium
inhibit muscarinic cholinergic receptors, preventing bronchoconstriction and reducing mucus secretion in the airway
Side effects of Anticholinergics
Dry mouth, urinary retention, blurred vision constipation and tachycardia
Corticosteroids drugs
Beclomethasone, Budesonide, Fluticasone
MOA of Corticosteroids: beclomethasone, budesemide, and fluticasome
Bind to glucocorticoid receptors, reduce the production of inflammatory mediators.
Side effects Corticosteroids
Oral thrush, osteoporosis, weight gain, increases risk for infections
MOA of short acting Beta-2 agonists
Activate beta-2 receptors to relax
bronchial smooth muscles
Side effects of short acting Beta-2 agonists
Tachycardia, palpitations, tremors,
nervousness
MOA for long acting beta 2 agonist
Same as SABAs but with prolonged action
Side effects for Long acting beta 2 agonist
Similar to SABAs but less frequent
Phosphodiesterase 5 Inhibitors drugs
Roflumilast
MOA of phosphodiesterase 5 Inhibitors
inhibiting phosphodiesterase-4 enzyme.
Side effects phosphodiesterase 5 Inhibitors
Diarrhea, weight loss, nausea, headache, insomnia
leukotriene receptor antagonists drugs
Montelukast, Zafirlukast
MOA of Leukotriene receptor antagonists
blocks leukotriene receptor or inhibit enzyme 5 lipoxygenase which is involved in the synthesis of leukotrienes
Side effects of Leukotriene receptor antagonists
Headache, Stomach upset, mood changes (Montelukast)
and elevated liver enzymes (Zileuton)
Key difference btwn asthma and COPD in terms of pathophysiology and clinical presentation.
List various drugs that are used in the tx of asthma
Recognize signs of drug overdose during therapy session
What signs should you monitor if a pt took short acting bronchodialators ~30 mins before PT session. How might this influence you plan for the session and what signs and symptoms should you monitor.
Pt with COPD reports experiencing palpations and tremors after starting new medication. Which drug would likely cause these symptoms and how might they impact your session?
