Assessment Part Four Flashcards
Give two examples of when you might need to use these motivational interviewing techniques.
When a person does not want to be involved in an activity that could benefit them
Trying to find out more information about an issue or problem client is having
What is collaborative communication?
Collaborative communication is when all involved in care work together towards the same goal: carer, health workers, client.
What are the benefits of collaborative communication? (Provide at least 2 examples)
Improves the health outcomes of the client
Team work means many people working together towards same goal for the benefit of the client
What is the difference between motivational interviewing and a coercive approach?
Motivational interviewing is working with the client to see a need for and commit to positive change, where as coercive approach is having the client do something they don’t want to do that would be in their best interests, ie: client doesn’t want insulin but has to due to diabetes.
What is the difference between collaboration and confrontation?
Collaboration is working with others to reach the same goal. Confrontation is to challenge someone, for different reasons. Ie: A client is diabetic and wants to manage it, but refuses to have anyone monitor their levels.
Provide three techniques you can use to effectively communicate with someone from a different cultural background.
Be aware of differences in culture, ie: eye contact, personal space.
Speak with proper volume and clearly.
Have an interpreter available to assist in communication
What is motivational interviewing? Explain.
Motivational interviewing is used to help a client see a need for positive change and commit to that change by asking different questions in different ways and reflecting and summarising.
