what was knight service
Knight service: duty to provide a knight up to 40 days a year

- Ensured the king had military power without paying.
- Designed so that William received grants of land for providing the expensive service of training the knights

- King Could control barons (major land owner) through grants, land, relief and forfeiture.

why was royal forest resented
- extended kings hunting land taking it away from others
- locals evicted
- harsh punishments for hunting these
- laws prohibited damage to the vegitation

- LEGAL - sorted out legal disputes about who owns what
- MILITARY - william could see how many more knights his tenants could provide for knight service
- FINANCIAL - king could see whwere ppl should be paying more and what land they should inheirt
