Articles of confederation Flashcards
What were the Articles of confederation?
Articles of Confederation were a way of creating a national government which was as little like the British parliamentary system as the patriots could make it.
What happened on june 1776? And what did they do?
Congress appointed a committee of thirteen (one man from each state) to draw up a constitution for government and to fight the war.
What were some of the important articles?
All powers not specifically granted to Congress were reserved by the states.
All states had to agree to any amendment of the constitution.
Congress could, however, declare war, borrow and issue money (paper money which was based on nothing as they could not raise any taxes), draw up treaties and alliances with foreign powers
There was no president, prime minister or cabinet. Instead, each state had one vote regardless of size.
States sent delegates to Congress but only one congressman was elected for each state.
When was it approved by congress?
Nov 1777
When was the Articles of Confederation ratified and why did it take so long?
- until 1781 - when Maryland ratified the document
- took a long time because the country was at war
