Arthrology (Joints) Flashcards
What does the mobility of two bones or cartilage structures depend on?
on the form of the gap between the two joints
What is a “synarthosis”?
a continuous structure bridging two adjacent bones.
What does synarthrosis made out of connective tissue build?
a fibrous union or a fibrous joint
What can a synarthrosis be made out of?
- connective tissue
- cartilage
What does synarthrosis made out of cartilage build?
a cartilaginous union or a cartilaginous joint
How can the range of motion between two skeletal structures be increased?
When a joint containing a gap between them exists (DIARTHROSIS)
What is a synovial joint characterised by? What is its differnt name?
A synovial joint = a true joint
- joint gap
- joint cavity
- filled with joint fluid
State examples of fibrous unions.
- connective tissue joints
- sutures (uniting the bones of the skull)
- impactions (anchoring teeth)
State examples of cartilaginous unions.
- hyaline cartilage unions
- fibrocartilage unions (eg. pelvic symphasis)
What is a synostosis?
a synarthrose in which bone unites two structures
