Q
Proteoglycans
A
- Protein bearing one or more glycosaminoglycan chains
- Not a close family of proteins; no unifying fatures except for the presence of glycosaminoglycan
- The extent of glycosaminoglycan substitution may vary
4
Q
Aggrecan
A
- Contains sulphated glycosaminoglycans, except hyaluronan
- negatively charged moleule
5
Q
Modifiable risk factors for osteoarthritis
A
- Injury and joint trauma
- BMI and composition
- Muscle weakness
- Mechanical weakness
- Mechanical stress (heavy lifting, kneeling, professional ballet dancer etc)
- Deformity and mal-alignment
- Inflammaory disorders
- Endocrine, metabolic, hormonal
6
Q
Treatment for OA
A
- Symptom modifier such as analgesics, glucosamine & chondroitin sulphate, hyaluronic acid injection
- Disease modifying: metalloproteinase inhibitors? IL-1 inhibitors? GFs? Gene therapy?
