Arteriosclerosis Flashcards
Atherosclerosis
where are the deposits located?
in intimal layer
Morphological stages of atherosclerosis
fatty streak –> atherosclerosis
What pathological entity can result from atherosclerosis in the abdomen?
abdominal aortic aneurysm
What is arteriolosclerosis?
narrowing of small arterioles
(with atherosclerotic plaques)
What are the 2 types of arteriolosclerosis?
hyaline (slow-due to deposits of proteins due to HTN and/or DM)
hyperplastic (fast-due to malignant HTN and subsequent elastin proliferation)
Haline arteriolosclerosis
two etiologies (may be present together)
long-standing benign HTN
DM
Hyaline arteriolosclerosis
major complication
arteriolonephrosclerosis
progresses to chronic renal failure
Hyperplastic arteriolosclerosis etiology
malignant HTN
hyperplasia of smooth muscle
“onion-skin” appearance
Hyperplastic arteriolosclerosis
complications
rapid end organ damage
fibrinoid necrosis of vessel wall w/ hemorrhage
acute renal failure w/ “flea-bitten” appearance
Mönckeberg medial calcific sclerosis
signifigance
benign, does not impinge lumen
signifigant only because may appear on X-ray or mammogram
calcifications are vessels, and look like it, not the calcifications that are cancers
