Arteries of the body Flashcards
Artery: Aorta
Description: Largest artery in the body, originates from the left ventricle of the heart.
Function: Distributes oxygenated blood to the entire body.
Artery: Carotid Artery
Description: Two main branches: common carotid artery (left and right).
Function: Supplies blood to the head and neck regions.
Artery: Brachial Artery
Description: Located in the upper arm.
Function: Supplies blood to the arm and forearm.
Artery: Radial Artery
Description: Runs along the radius bone in the forearm.
Function: Supplies blood to the forearm and hand.
Artery: Ulnar Artery
Description: Runs along the ulna bone in the forearm.
Function: Supplies blood to the forearm and hand, primarily the medial side.
Artery: Femoral Artery
Description: Major artery of the thigh.
Function: Supplies blood to the thigh and lower abdominal wall.
Artery: Popliteal Artery
Description: Located behind the knee.
Function: Supplies blood to the knee joint and muscles in the thigh and calf.
Artery: Dorsalis Pedis Artery
Description: Runs along the dorsum of the foot.
Function: Supplies blood to the dorsum of the foot and toes
Artery: Posterior Tibial Artery
Description: Located in the posterior aspect of the lower leg.
Function: Supplies blood to the posterior compartment of the leg and plantar aspect of the foot.
Artery: Renal Artery
Description: Supplies blood to the kidneys.
Function: Provides oxygenated blood to the kidneys for filtration.
Artery: Hepatic Artery
Description: Supplies oxygenated blood to the liver.
Function: Nourishes liver cells and supports metabolic functions.
Artery: Pulmonary Artery
Description: Carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs.
Function: Facilitates gas exchange in the lungs.
Artery: Coronary Arteries
Description: Branches off the aorta, supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle itself.
Function: Ensure that the heart receives the oxygen and nutrients it needs to function properly.
Artery: Subclavian Artery
Description: Arises from the aortic arch, extends laterally beneath the clavicle.
Function: Supplies blood to the arms, shoulders, and chest wall.
Artery: Axillary Artery
Description: Continuation of the subclavian artery beyond the lateral border of the first rib.
Function: Supplies blood to the axilla (armpit), upper arm, and shoulder.
Artery: Celiac Artery
Description: Branches off the abdominal aorta just below the diaphragm.
Function: Supplies blood to the stomach, liver, spleen, and pancreas.
Artery: Iliac Arteries (Common, External, and Internal)
Description: Common iliac arteries branch off the abdominal aorta.
Function: Supply blood to the pelvis and lower limbs.
Artery: Mesenteric Arteries (Superior and Inferior)
Description: Arise from the abdominal aorta below the celiac artery.
Function: Supply blood to the intestines (small and large) for digestion and absorption of nutrients.
Artery: Renal Arteries
Description: Arise from the abdominal aorta just below the superior mesenteric artery.
Function: Supply blood to the kidneys for filtration and waste removal.
