What is the first symptom of arsenic poisoning?
Severe gastroenteritis
What dose of arsenic can be lethal?
> 1mg/kg
What is it found in?
Earths crust/the ground! Semiconductors | Glass | pesticides | wood | herbal remedies
Why are arsenics in seafood non-toxic?
They are not metabolised to free arsenic
What is the deadliest form of arsenic?
Arsine gas: generated when arsenic mixes with an acid
What clinical syndromes can occur?
Encaphlopathy/seizures
Acute cardiomyopathy/prolonged QT
Bone marrow suppression
Alopecia
Chronic toxicity?
Cutaneous lesions - hyperpigmentation
Mees lines on nails
Peripheral neuropathy
What bedside test can be used?
Spot urinary arsenic
Treatment?
Chelation using oral/NG DMSA 10mg/kg orally TDS
Can be used for all heavy metal intoxications including LEAD
SAFE drug and can be given as an outpatient if otherwise stable
