aromatic chemistry Flashcards
1
Q
Describe benzene
A
an aromatic compound
consisting of a ring of 6 carbon atoms
6 hydrogen atoms
ring of delocalised electrons
planar
2
Q
how is the central ring formed ?
A
the outer electron from the p orbital of each carbon is delocalised
this makes benzene very stable
3
Q
what are Arenes and give properties
A
Compounds that contain benzene as part of their structure
they have high melting points due to high stability of delocalised ring
low boiling points as they are non polar and can’t be dissolved in water
