Arm and Cubital Fossa Flashcards
anterior compartment arm
Biceps brachii
Coracobrachialis
Brachialis
posterior compartment of arm
Triceps brachii
Biceps brachii
long head
O- supraglenoid tubercle of the scapula
short head
O- coracoid process of the scapula
I- tubercle of the radius and bicipital aponeurosis
N- musculocutaneous nerve
A- flexes and supinates forearm
Coracobrachialis
O- coracoid process of the scapula
I- middle third of the medial side of the humerus
N- musculocutaneous nerve
A- flexion and adduction of the arm
Brachialis
O- distal half of the anterior surface of the humerus
I- coronoid process and tuberosity of the ulna
N- musculocutaneous, nerve and radial nerve
A- flexes forearm (workhorse)
triceps brachii
Long head
O- infraglenoid tubercle of the scapula
medial head
O- posterior surface of the humerus inferior to the spiral groove
Lateral head
O-posterior surface of the humerus superior to the spiral groove
I- olecranon process of the ulna
N- radial nerve
A- extends the forearm
Anconeus
Not considered part of the posterior compartment
O- lateral epicondyle of the humerus
I- lateral surface of olecranon process and posterior surface of the ulna
N- radial nerve
A- extension of the forearm- it pulls on capsule of elbow joint to prevent it being pinched during extension
musculocutaneous nerve
from lateral cord brachial plexus
supplies anterior brachium
radial nerve
from posterior cord
supplies posterior brachium and continues into forearm
brachial artery
gives rise to profunda brachii artery which travels to the posterior brachium with radial nerve to supply posterior compartment
2 brachial veins accompany brachial artery
cephalic vein
Superficial vein
Runs along the anterior lateral surface of the biceps and empties into the axillary vein near the deltopectoral triangle
basilic vein
superficial vein
Runs along the inferior medial surface
Enters deep to the brachial facia at the middle of the arm, and becomes the axillary vein
median cubital vein
Communication of the cephalic and basilic in the cubital fossa
Boundaries of the cubital fossa
superior- imaginary line between the epicondyles of the humerus
Lateral - brachioradialis
medial- pronator teres
Floor - medial- brachialis
- Lateral- supinator
Roof- cubital fascia
contents of the cubital fossa: superficial layer
Basilic vein
Cephalic vein
Median cubital vein
Bicipital aponeurosis
