Arizona Issues Flashcards
what is the cause of heat stress
fluid and electrolyte loss during exhaustive exercise
what can cause exercise to become exhaustive and therefor heat stress
-high ambient temp
-poor conditions
-lack of normal sweating
what mechanism in horses fail therefor causing heat stress
mechanisms of heat dissipation are overwhelmed/ or inadequate
when can heat stroke occur
over a relatively short period of time
what causes heat stroke
-unfit athlete worked strenuously in high ambient temp
- horses confined in poorly ventilated, hot trailers
what is proper management for heat stroke
-ride in cool of day
-ride in shade
-warm up/cool down horses properly
-electrolytes (year round)
-allow horses to drink properly
-consider clipping
what do you do in cases of heat stroke
-stop activity immediately, unsaddle
-hose down with water
-scrape water off and repeat
-offer water
-move to shade, breezy location
-call vet
what is anhidrosis
decreased ability/ inability to sweat in response to stimuli (exercise)
when are horses most commonly affected by anhidrosis
-during hot/ humid climate for at least part of the year
- summer months
what are clinical signs anhidrosis
-exercise intolerance
-increased respiratory rate
-increased body temp
-absence or decreased amount of sweat
what is affected the most by CHRONIC anhidrosis
hair coat
-becomes dry, flakey , patchy (alopecia)
what is the treatment for anhidrosis
-supplementing salt
-potassium chloride
-commercial electrolyte preparation
-vitamin E
-move horse to cooler climate
how can you manage anhidrosis
-air conditioning
-cold hosing/ ice bath
-body clipping
-shade
-plenty of water
what are things to avoid when preventing anhidrosis
turn out/ exercise during heat of day
what is sand colic
abdominal pain caused by ingestion and accumulation of sand
what are the clinical signs of sand colic
-diarrhea
-weight loss
-sand accumulation within colon sounds like breaking waves
how can you manage sand colic
-test manure for sand
-feed off ground
-administer pysllium pellets
how often should you administer psyllium pellets
daily 20-30 (if full of sand)
-3/5 days every week
-5/7 days every other week
what is a common equine respiratory condition
equine asthma (heaves)
what are clinical signs of equine asthma
-cough
-increased respiratory effort even at rest
-heave lines
-difficulty eating
-weight loss
what is the treatment/management for equine asthma
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTOR
-keep horse in pasture
-clean stalls
-ventilated barn/ open areas
-soak and spread hay
DRUG
-corticosteroid to reduce inflammation of airways
-bronchodilators
what are the two key aspects to managing equine asthma
drug treatments and environmental changes
