A-1 / fixed seats w/ low light levels during performance
A-2 / food and drink consumed, alcohol, loose chairs and tables, associated kitchens
A-3 / worship, recreation, amusement
A-4 / indoor sporting events
A-5 / outdoor sporting events

BUSINESS GROUP OCCUPANCY
GROUP B
Office buildings are typ classified as Group B occupancies. Storage areas for offices, such as back-office file rooms, do not constitute a separate occupancy
“Ambulatory Care Facility” is contained in the B occupancy list - even w/ patients incapable of unassisted self-preservation if patents stay for <24 hrs

- 6 or more people for classes up to the 12th grade
- day care of 6 or more children over 2 1/2 yrs old (fewer than 6 are R-3)

Defined by what they are not
F-1 / MODERATE HAZARD alcohol abv 16%
F-2 / LOW-HAZARD (materials are non-combustible), alcohol under 16%
based on analysis of the relative hazards fo the operations in these occ and a determination they do not fall under Group H

HIGH-HAZARD CONTROL AREAS
“spaces within a building where quantities of hazardous materials not exceeding the maximum allowable quantities per control area are stored, dispensed, used or handled”
Control Areas allow mult parts of a bldg to contain areas w/ specified quantity of hazardous material. The amount of allowable hazardous material decreases as floor levels increase.

GROUP I
subdivided by abilities of the occ to take care of themselves in emergency
I-1 C1 / >16 ppl, 24-hr sv, unassisted, alarmed exit
I-1 C2 / >16, 24-hr sv, staff assistance, smoke detection barriers, alarmed exit sprinklers limit stories
I-2 / >5 ppl, 24-hr sv, staff assistance (Hospitals, nursing homes, mental hospitals)
I-3 / >5 ppl, 24-hr sv, prisons, detentions centers, controlled exit
I-4 / >5 ppl, <24-hr, assistance needed, (6-100 child daycare under 2-1/2 yrs old)

includes mixed-use provisions in section 508
most retail facilities, no matter what merchandise they sell (newly added greenhouses for display and sale of plants)
limits to quantities of hazardous materials that may be stored in mercantile occupancies

TYP housing units distinguished by total # of occupants, occ sleep in the building
R-1 / 30 days or less (hotels), assumes occ unfamiliar

R-3 / care facilities for <6 ppl and other - IRC
R-4 / assisted living 6-16 occ (C1 ppl capable of evacuating and C2 incapable)

“The floor area within the inside perimeter of the exterior walls of the building under consideration, exclusive of vent shafts and courts, without deduction for corridors, stairways, ramps, closets, the thickness of interior walls, columns or other features. The floor area of a bldg or portion thereof, not provided with surrounding exterior walls shall be the usable area under teh horizontal projection of the roof or floor above. The gross floor area shall not include shafts with no opeings or interior couts.
