What happens in ARDS

A

It starts with a person with a normal lung, then acute insult (such as pneumonia, overdose, trauma)

  1. Then onset of non-cardiac pulmonary edema, chest X-ray show diffuse lung infiltrates. Hypoxemia not responding to oxygen therapy: Joss of surfactant causes alveolar collapse witha shunt mechanism for hypoxemia

A

Therapy principle= oxygen therapy delivered by cpap/peep

Usually obese pt, often a male complaining of snoring and daytime sleepiness (somnolence)
